Earlier today we showed you the picture first unconfirmed 4G iPhone, and now we have the first mention of the codename of the next generation iPhone. Moreover, it appears that Apple should start a new version of iPod touch, if that was welfare of the many new products from Apple.

Buried within the iPhone OS 3.2 SDK the codename of the next iPhone has been found along with the codenames of other mobile devices made by Apple including the iPhone 3GS, the iPod touch 2G and the iPad. The code of this new iPhone 4G is supposed to be N89. Previous iPhone versions were called M68, N82 and N88 so it’s pretty obvious why one would assume that the N89 is the next iPhone in line.

The next iPod touch version is also included within firmware 3.1.3. N80 is the codename for the upcoming device but at this point I don’t think we need a new iPod touch version, do we? Considering that Apple will launch the new phone and the iPad later this year there’s basically no need for upgrading the iPod touch so soon, is it?

Speaking of iPhone OS 3.1.3, the new software is now available for download and you will be able to update your iPhones and iPod touch immediately. Don’t expect anything spectacular out of version 3.1.3. The update will bring you just minor bug fixes and improvements including the following:

  • Improves accuracy of reported battery level on iPhone 3GS
  • Resolves issue where third-party apps would not launch in some instances
  • Fixes bug that may cause an app to crash when using the Japanese Kana keyboard

So there you have it, folks! Just as expected iPhone rumors have started to come in fairly quickly after the launch of the iPad. The following weeks should bring us lots of new handsets since the MWC 2010 is almost upon us. Should we also expect leaks and rumors regarding the next-gen iPhone? You know, just so Apple can generate some buzz around its products while its main competitors are getting ready to start revealing their mobile plans for this year.

New iPhone 4G / iPod Touch and 2010 Apple A4 CPU

When Apple announced that they were to use their new ARM Cortex A8 CPUs in the 3GS and new iPod Touch, we are all amazed at how much faster it was. However, we were even more shocked when Apple introduced to us their new A4 chip in the iPad tablet device.

This has all got us exited about what is to come on the iPhone 4G and if Apple will make the new CPU available to the smartphone in 2010. It is no secret that Apple wanted to shy away from third-party suppliers and offer their own custom chips; well they have finally done it.

According to The iPhone Blog, they say that the reason for the 10-hour battery life on the new iPad is mostly due to the new A4 custom chip, just imagine what that would do for the battery life in the new iPhone and iPod Touch?

Little is known about the hardware of the iPad, but it does make you think of what the iPhone 4G will have. We are hoping that we will get at least 512MB of RAM, hopefully that new custom-built chip, up to 64GB of storage and the latest PowerVR SGX GPU.

We do wonder if we will actually see a 4th-generation iPhone in 2010, July would be the date of release but would Apple launch it so close to the launch of the iPad?
